One Woodworker's Point of View

Woodworking is a great hobby and can also be a rewarding profession. Building something beautiful out of wood is very satisfying. It seems the harder the project, the more satisfaction comes from it.

The way the wood comes to life when stain or a clear finish is introduced to the grain; the feeling you get when others are amazed that you built this beautiful object from a pile of plain-looking wood; watching your children playing with or sleeping in something you built: These are some of the things I enjoy most about woodworking.

The journey is in creating something new, without plans or without the complete finished product in mind. Inventing it as I go along, adding this piece, routing that piece; making something with my creativity and when I don't have the tool I might need, having to build jigs or contraptions to hold or mold the wood to how I envision.

When I enter my woodworking domain and start cutting, routing, or sanding, I'm in my own little world and forget about the stressful things I can't change anyway. I build and daydream of the things I hope to build for my family and what my great grandchildren's children will think when they someday play with or sleep in something I made.

That's just one woodworkers point of view. Copyright 2007 kjwoodworking.com Hi all, I'm Kirk!

I have been playing with wood for a few years now and love it. I'm married and have four kids that range 4years through 18. It started when I built a shelf for my wife and I've been hooked on woodworking ever since.

In the beginning I didn't have the funds for buying the wood I needed for some of my woodworking projects, so I resorted to using shipping pallets. I've read that a lot of woodworkers frown on this because they view it as trash wood. I disagree and have gotten some beautiful wood from large shipping pallets.

I like the look of some rustic furniture, and think some of the wood I've used looks old and antique, with the nail holes and the black stain from rusty nails. I made this crib from pallets years back and have made and sold quite a few since.

I've got some wood now that was used to support pipes in Georgia, most of it is oak. I have quarter-sawn some for a few projects and the wood is beautiful. I hope you enjoy my woodworking site and maybe even learn something new. I'm hoping the site inspires some to try woodworking or maybe to try building a bigger project.

I believe the key is to not get in a hurry and cut corners. Take your time, measure carefully, and spend more time in prepping your woodworking project before putting on the finish. Stick around and check out some of my woodworking projects and tips. If you have any questions or want to share pictures of your projects
